- New error code for invalid mailboxes/user unknown:
[edited]
The actual error code is
500 5.1.1 <sdfklsdksdfdfd@aol.com>: Recipient address rejected: aol.com
Senders using scripts to remove unknown users automatically should be looking for both the new error code and the old one.
The Postmaster site will be updated with new SMTP error codes as quickly as possible.
- Still migrating, and the MTA timeouts continue, but mail should go through on re-try. If this is not the case please contact us and let us know. Please include some log lines so that we can troubleshoot. A manual SMTP session would also be invaluable.
- Some feedback loop recipients may find they have malformed ARF. We are aware of the problem and are working on a fix.

1. I noticed the use of RFC 3463 (Enhanced Mail System Status Codes). Excellent! However, I think the MTA should advertise that too:
$ telnet 205.188.190.2 25
Trying 205.188.190.2...
Connected to mtain-df.r1000.mx.aol.com (205.188.190.2).

mail from:
250 2.1.0 Ok
rcpt to:
550 5.1.1 : Recipient address rejected: aol.com

221 2.0.0 Bye
If I understand the RFCs, DSN allows a sender to ask for DSNs, while ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES states that enhanced status codes will be present in SMTP replies.

2. Annalivia,
Starting about a week ago members of my organization who have mail forwarded to their AOL accounts (via a distribution group) get the following error when someone replies to the distribution group:
Final-Recipient: rfc822;abc@aol.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.6.1
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host
X-Display-Name: ABC
We've never had this happen before and we've always had AOL users. Can this be related to your migration? How can I fix this on my end? The AOL folks are the only ones this is happening too.
Thanks,
Dave

3. mtain-md08.r1000.mx.aol.com #540 5.4.0 Service not available ##rfc822;xxx@xxx.com
What is this error code? This codes does not exist in the SMTP error list and also a case cannot be created online since there is no recognizable code in that bounce back error for the form.

4. @Jeff - thanks, I passed it on.
@Dave and Jason - I'm trying to find someone who can answer your questions. I will reply when I know something.

6. What happened to my AOL mail? The autocomplete on the addresses doesn't work anymore. I have to look up each email address and make sure I type it correctly. A real pain when sending to a group. The format is changed. No longer a trash can by each email to delete it. Format is completely different. Spell check is unwieldy. What is going on?

7. The more articles as far as this problem found at the http://www.pdfqueen.com ebooks search engine I read, the more interesting and informative info I manage to find! And always something new!

8. Where's my comment? Here it is again!
Dear Ms. Ford;
Why am I getting error message 5.7.1 (sender address refused) when I hit "Send?"
I've found that when this happens I can save the message as a draft, close my mail client, and when I re-open it I can send the message o.k.
I presume that when AOL acquired Netscape there was an obligation to support the Netscape email accounts. I've had my email address ending in ...@netscape.net for many years, and I don't wish to change. All of my many correspondents use that address, and when I receive email addressed to me ...@aol.com or ...@aim.com I can be sure that it's spam resulting from someone stealing (or selling) the email addresses in your database.
Please advise. This doesn't happen all of the time, but it's inconvenient, to say the least.
Regards,
Ralph

9. Annalivia:
Hi. I'm have the same problem that Dave described earlier. We have a user on our Exchange server, Kathie, that forwards her email to her AOL account. Starting earlier this year, external mail being forwarded to her AOL account gets rejected with the following error:
Action: failed
Status: 5.6.1
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host
Kathie has been having email forwarded to her AOL account for 4 years without a problem. However, this issue just cropped up earlier this year, and I'm wondering if it has to do with AOL's recent upgrade.
We have lots of other users forwarding email to other external accounts (Comcast, Verizon, GMail, HotMail, etc.), and only the AOL customer is experiencing this issue.
Has a solution to Dave's problem been discovered, and if so, what is it? It will likely solve my problem, as well.
Thanks!
Van

10. I too have the same problem as Van mentioned above.
Action: failed
Status: 5.6.1
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by Remote Host
I have tried disabling 8 bit MIME on our virtual server but e-mails are still being rejected

11. It turns out the e-mails that I was having issues with were going through a different virtual smtp server. Once I turned off 8 bit Mime on that server, all e-mail to AOL went through

12. As of Friday I have not been able to receive any emails from a T-Mobile account. They can receive mine and they receive no errors when sending to me, I just do not receive them.

13. Its been a few weeks now, and I have noticed that the "status" on the AOL email isn't working once again. Is this going to be restored? I certainly hope so, because there are times when we all need to see if our emails to another AOL member has been read.
Thanks
Di

14. I want to make sure that the error code discussed means that the account is no longer valid at AOL.

15. I was using AOL for my email regarding my childrens Stroller Reviews site and it kept crashing as Van above suggests. Do we have a workaround yet since this has been happening for a very long time now.

16. I forgot to mention, the error message which was returned from my inbox which is linked to http://www.strollerzone.co was something to do with error code 340989 if that makes any sense? It doesnt to this mom thats for sure!
